So I've been obsessing over the past few months, especially through the holiday season, about how many SALES are going on ALL THE TIME everywhere. Really? Is this entirely necessary? I for one can't follow this lead. I'm too small a company with too much invested in my products. I design with intent - to make my designs last, a long time hopefully. And this morning I found this video. Brilliant, Simple, Done. Educating the American Consumer - North Carolina Organic Cotton

TS Designs, a t-shirt manufacturer in North Carolina has been walking the organic walk for more than a decade. They print t's 'for any organization looking for a better quality product with a better environmental and social impact.' I love their rehance printing process. As the owner, Eric Henry states so eloquently, It's all about education and supporting American manufacturing. They're creating the jobs that politicians are just talking about. I have such admiration for a company like this. My dream is to aquire enough capital to work with as many US companies like TS designs as we can for our fabric by the yard, and women's accessories. This video says so much in just a few minutes. Take 5, it's worth the watch.

A Few More Custom Pieces to Wind Up the Year

The ottoman and rocker are upholstered in our New Madeira Vine / citron colorway - hemp herringbone.

These 2 pieces are for a lovely, patient, California customer who I was in contact with today. The red Anemone Chairs turned out adorable, love the double welting and button/tufting. The Ottoman was a bit more challenging. Caitlin backed our Paradise/azure herringbone but there was still a bit of 'puckering' as she described it. We're speaking with our upholsterer here in Bristol to work that out for all future projects. And, as I explained to Caitlin, in early 2012 we'll be adding a 14oz hemp/org cotton canvas to our selection of organic fabrics - perfect for upholstery. We'll add pics as soon as we have them.

As we wind down in 2011 I'd like to share some snapshots of previous projects meant to inspire all of you who might be considering a transformative project in 2012! Client - Manchester By The Sea, MA…'Anemone' in seaweed green, with matching pillows - hemp/org cotton twill. This was a great example of the right furniture in the right setting. Lovely seaside New England town.

DIY - Revamping & Reinvigorating That Old Chair!

So I thought I would share this great up-cycled chair project that my partner and I worked on last year. I share this to inspire all of you out there with an old piece of furniture that's been sitting around just waiting to be loved again and crying out for some fabulous new fabric. And, in accordance with our mission of being a truly sustainable company - revamping this vintage bamboo chair in the greenest way possible was our ultimate goal. The final upholstered fabric is called Madeira Vine (one of my favorite designs) in marigold orange - 100% hemp.

Here we go!First sanding, getting rid of ugly old brown dingy paint color. Lots of elbow grease.

Arms sanded down to a nice clean, smooth surface - more elbow grease.

Final sanded chair - ready for a first coat of primer. It's so rewarding when you get to this point in your project. Seeing your chosen chair down to it's bare bones like this really forces you to appreciate the structure and design.

So, while my partner was doing all that sanding I was measuring and cutting our Madeira Vine fabric for the new cushions, which by the way, I did not sew. Our local lovely Ms. Quigley helped with that part of this project. The fabric is 100% hemp, twill construction, 12 oz; a perfect weight and strength. We wanted a high end looking finished piece so we decided on a 4" thick cushion, gusseted and corded with our 100% organic cotton twill tape. For the interior we went with a 100% latex foam (crazy expensive) It gives a firm, comfortable seat and it's a natural, biodegradable, renewable resource. (Latex is inherently hypo-allergenic, anti-microbial and dust-mite resistant. Because it breathes to remove body moisture, it keeps you warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. latex is not a plastic foam, like polyurethane. It is a denser product made of rubber to last a lifetime)

wrapped in 100% organic wool and notice the inner cover made from our lightweight hemp linen - 6oz. So that's 2 completely removable covers that can easily be cleaned.

Finished cushions, looking lovely with org cotton cording, zipper closure in back.

True Artistry & Craftsmanship - Alexander McQueen

So my trip down to New York was wonderful. The Alexander McQueen show was as fantastic as I knew it would be, massive crowds not withstanding. At least I got to view beautiful Asian art along the way. Seeing these garments up close just reinforced the beauty and unmatched craftsmanship that I saw on the Metropolitan's website. I am sure that each of the hundreds of visitors to this show feels the same sadness and loss at the death of this brilliant designer. His legacy is a repertoire of rare imagination. I'm so very fortunate that I had the opportunity to view these collections in the flesh.

Hi everyone, I am thrilled to announce that we have some new patterns that have just arrived:

New Madeira Vine in green and pink colorways,

They are all on our 100% hemp herringbone, Oeko-tex approved reactive dyes. These new patterns are a bit smaller in scale and have a softer palette than our first collection (they did in fact start out considerably brighter since that is my preference…but for technical reasons beyond our control……yes indeed) They would be gorgeous as draperies, upholstered headboards and of course pillows! So here we are getting closer to Earth Day, and the opening of our new Bristol, RI shop…what better way to fulfill my love of all things oceanic, promote our company AND the preservation of the planet's resources….spend a few hours in an Ocean Explorium! OT has been invited to participate in The Massachusetts Audubon Society's Annual Sustainable Earth event taking place at The Ocean Explorium in historic downtown New Bedford, MA. on Thursday, April 14th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. We will be among the vendors and are honored to be participating, exhibiting, educating, and offering for sale, OT products - purses, belts, pillows, and brand new water = life t-shirts, all made form our organic cotton and hemp fabrics.

Winter Session RISD/CE "Green Textiles for Home and Apparel" was an absolute pleasure for me to teach. Every one of my 10 students was dedicated to environmental principles of design and production. We brainstormed about sourcing, printing, and production methods. We watched TED talks, started business plans, and shared swatches. Great research, great projects. I wish you all success. And so we start a new chapter.

Though it has been eons since I've posted on this blog, an unforgivable sin in this day and age of social networking, we have nonetheless been working as hard as ever to keep Oliviera Textiles humming. Along with a new updated website,(as of a few moments ago) new products and new patterns coming, We also have a sweet new storefront/studio in the works right here in Bristol. "Oliveira Textiles Studio" is located at 219 High Street, right next door to "Roxies Consignment Boutique". We plan to open right around Earth Day so look for updates here and on our new FaceBook page - OLIVEIRA TEXTILES.

This will give us the opportunity to connect with our local community, spread our sustainability message, and have a more organized space to work from. Boy will I be happy to have more space here at home…whew…

As well, I've been teaching my Sustainable Textiles class through RISD's Continuing Ed Department. This past session, I've been lucky enough to have incredibly talented, eager and delightful women to share 6 weeks of deep discussions on all things organic. We hope you join us on this journey and really look forward to hearing from you.

The Green Revolution?

Has anyone listened to a recent NPR broadcast referencing an article in the June issue of National Geographic titled The End of Plenty? As I listened, I kept hearing the term, Green Revolution...I was perplexed because this revolution was not a positive, reaffirming one...No, this Green Revolution, which began in the 50's, was quite different than the "Planet Green/Cradle to Cradle", one we are moving towards today. Joel K Bourne Jr., in his NG article, painfully points out what has happened around the world as we've stopped paying attention to the realities of our food supply.
The author's insightful essay reminds us that today most of our food is shipped to us from the far corners of the globe and "we no longer, grow, harvest or prepare most of our daily bread".
The new monocultures require lots of water, synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Of course nothing lasts forever and much of the land in India, to name one country, has today, been lost to salinization. The water is poisoned-truly a grim picture. (The same is happening with conventional cotton production around the globe).

The article wraps up on a more positive note with an alternative offering-sustainable agriculture or "agroecology". Farmers and consumers facing the realities of climate change can no longer afford to support monocultures with their dependence on fossil-fuel based fertilizers. "The underlying idea is that we must stop focusing on simply maximizing grain yields at any cost and consider the environmental and social impacts of food production. It is disturbing that we continue to encourage farmers to rely on expensive, toxic imputs that are making money for corporate giants rather than on more ecological methods that use local resources and skills".

Read the story, grow a garden, enjoy and celebrate the healthy choices we have, support sustainable agriculture--for our food, for our fibers and for our kids' futures.

These synthetic chemicals make clothing, furniture and electronics less flammable, but we now know they are harmful to humans and to sealife, especially killer whales. Talk about ' full cirlce'...My entire family (8 kids) at my dad's request, would gather around the TV on Sunday evenings to watch Jacques Cousteau's undersea adventures.......and since we've been doing a fair amount of technical research these days..thought I would share this. We all want our kids and homes to be protected against any and all possible disasters, but are chemically saturated fabrics and clothing really necessary? The research is pretty heady and more scientific than many folks have the patience to read through...but I'll share an article I've just read anyway...link here.

"Recently there are increasing concerns over the environmental and toxicological impacts of halogenated flame retardants and their decomposition products formed when the flame retarded polymer systems are burned during an accidental fire, disposed off in the environment or being incinerated. California, for example, is to ban some halogenated flame retardants in 2008 due to the health concerns. Another serious drawback of halogenated polymer systems is that they generate thick smokes and toxic fumes when burned during a fire event.
A new series of low smoke, non-halogenated flame retardants have been developed. Tests showed that the flame retardants are effective in PP and other polyolefin compounds. These flame retardants compare favorably with traditional flame retardants such as halogenaated, mineral and APP flame retardants."

Well, I'm back from The Magic Show in Vegas, and inspite of all of the economic doom and gloom we hear today I feel inspired, and even more motivated to continue our sustainability goals - Sure everyone commented on the less than stellar turnout of attendees this year, but I still felt a high energy level..these are fashionistas after all..and although I am not a veteran of these kinds of trade shows as some folks I spoke to, we all just have to move forward albeit cautiously and intelligently.

And those of us in the sustainability sector, I believe strongly, are positioned to be leaders when this economy does get back on track.

(The Vegas 'Strip' is truly a bizarre place to vacation....but those mountains are 'spectacular'!)

Most importantly, I want to thank Matt Grigsby and Elizabeth Redmond from 'Ecolect' http://www.ecolect.net/ for graciously inviting Oliveira Textiles to join their panel of super sustainability speakers. I was honored to be included and look forward to future opportunities.

I got to chat with Jill Dumain - Textile expert from Patagonia! and listen to Eric Ryan - Founder of the incredibly successful,San Francisco based, 'Method'- the environmentally safe cleaning products company... So, admittedly, I did spend more time at Eco-seminars and other Eco-product booths than in the larger 'Magic' experience, but what I did see in the S.LA.T.E, STREET, & POOL fashion exhibits were some fabulous, hip, chic urban fashion companies...now if they were only taking those first steps to manufacture with the environment in mind, we'd all be golden!

So on Monday, Feb 16th, I will be headed to Las Vegas to join the panel discussion at the "Magic Show"/Ecolect Eco-Material Panel http://www.magiconline.com/ 0209-Seminars Eco and from the current state of affairs around the world, I have a feeling 'the economy' will be at the top of everyone's agenda.
From my own perspective as a designer, I will do my best to highlight the importance of creating a sustainable society through education, inspiration, and innovation...it will clearly take a concerted effort on the part of designers, scientists, economists and politicians to rescue our economy and protect our planet.

...Over the next three decades, today´s students must re-engineer and re-wire the world, provide shelter and food for three billion more people, and stabilize the global climate, sustainably.

...Catering to environmental demands also is becoming increasingly important for keeping the industry's mills and factories humming. The emphasis on "green" applies to the whole spectrum, from basic fibers all the way to finished garments. (and home textiles)

...Retailers also are in the forefront of the eco drive. Their basic message to suppliers these days: If you don't follow some ecological principles, we will look for other suppliers who can and will.

...One final sign that reducing the environmental footprint is now mainstream: The increasing reliance on third-party certifications. At last count, there were 38 certifiers for textiles. These include such organizations as the International Oeko-Tex Association, bluesign technologies ag and the International Working Group on Global Organic Textile Standard. Some of these outfits even work with manufacturers in such key areas as water use, energy and chemicals.

Well, I guess I've been out of the bloggosphere loop (been lost in endless technical research...) because I'm just now finding out that domino Magazine is folding. I'm so incredibly dissapointed to hear this news. I've loved this magazine since I found it while surfing the web 4 years ago. Before it ever hit the news stands, I was a subscriber, and eagerly awaited every issue in my mailbox.The casual hip style of the layouts and products totally hooked me. The products were mostly affordable and chic at the same time. It was just such a welcome relief compared to some other well known high-style furnshings mags. Not to mention how much we here at Oliveira Textiles enjoyed perusing domino's March 'Green Issue'. We thank everyone at the magazine for featuring our Shellgame pattern in 2008. And we really look forward to whatever new incarnation unfolds .

CPSC Grants One Year Stay
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is charged with protecting the public from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical or mechanical hazard.

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act has voted to issue a one year stay of enforcement (it remains in effect until February 10, 2010) for certain testing and certification requirements for manufacturers and importers of regulated products, including products intended for children 12 years and younger. This is limited relief from the testing and certification in effect as of February 10, 2009 for new total lead content limits (600ppm) and pthalates limits (1000ppm), among other things. The commission says it needs more time to finalize the proposed rules and to issue more guidance on when testing is required and how it is to be conducted.
For anyone not in the loop on this; it was legislation that would have potentially devastated small businesses who could not absorb the costs of testing dozens, 100's or 1000's of SKUs in inventory. Retailers felt they were being asked to assume the responsibility and costs while policing the whole process. And the beat goes on...
Keep in mind however that all businesses,including, but not limited to, handmade toy and apparel makers, crafters and home-based small busineses, must still be sure that their products conform to all safety standards including the lead and pthalates provisions under the CPSIA.
Oliveira Textiles uses only organic cotton and hemp along with oeko-tex approved dyes, and heavy-metal & pthalate free pigments. We are having our fabrics tested to confirm these facts to all of our customers.

The New Year...and a note on new consumer safety laws

Well, here we are on the last day of a memorable year, 2008..... tumultuous is probably a better word. Frankly I'm excited about ringing in the New Year, and welcoming all the possibilities: a new president who is completely on board with fostering a green economy, a stock market that just might be getting off the rollercoaster it's been riding since the fall, new growth opportunities for our own small green company.....and for good measure, WORLD PEACE.

We wanted to just list some important points.
--The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 is a US law
signed on August 14 2008 by Bush. It imposes new testing and requirements
on manufacturers of apparel, shoes, personal care products, accessories,
home furnishings, bedding, toys etc..
--This law is targeted mostly toward children's products.
--The legislation reduces the limit of lead allowed in products for children to:
* 600ppm by Feb 10, 2009
* 300ppm by August 14, 2009
* 100ppm by August 2011
--There is also legislation for Pthalates, DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIDP, DnOp:
Levels must be set at 0.1 percent.
--The burden falls primarily on the retailers' end product(to the consumer)They
are being asked to "retest" their products(every SKU) to prove that the limits
are as stated above even if they are using certified organic goods, as our fabrics are; and ideally, GOTS certified fabrics. GOTS maximum lead allowance is .2ppm....far below what this CPSA ruling allows.
This new CPSA really seems excessive and, needless to say has upset 1000's of small green businesses who cannot possibly meet these new deadlines and requirements. We, here at Oliveira Textiles will gladly sign petitions and/or take part in a plan of action to revise these new regulations. Stay tuned.

Good morning..I have to share:

I attended another Green Drinks Newport (RI) event last night; this month, hosted by a company called Farmaesthetics, http://www.farmaesthetics.com/ (Green Drinks is an international organization that allows people in the “green” and environmental community to come together. Through this network people have made friends, found jobs, exchanged information, developed new ideas and have helped others in the field with special projects. Most of all, people have fun!)

She started selling her product at a tiny farmstand in Portsmouth, RI,,,and with luck and determination has grown her business into a nationally recognized brand....

New Colorways

Well here we are in November, post election and mid bailout......and in spite of all the mayhem, we at OT are thinking positively and working diligently towards a brighter, greener future...mayhem, 'schmayhem', designers must design.
We are glad to announce that some new Anemone colorways and a new pattern called Madeira Vine have arrived. The New Anemones in: WildPlum, SunOrange & StormGrey feature a ground cloth of 100% Certified Organic Hemp in a herringbone construction. It's naturally soft and supple.
Our new dyes are 'fiber-reactive' and Oeko-Tex approved!
The Madeira Vine in ShaleSand is also printed on our herringbone, the Marigold colorway glows on our original Hemp twill. (name inspired by one of the beautiful Portuguese islands near The Azores)

Summer In The City

Hello all:
....ok time to 'feed the blog'....yes we've been busy and haven't updated in many weeks...so here's a rundown.....
On Tues Aug 11th, after a rather stormy drive (torrential rain with hail) down 95 South that included all manner of weather except locusts, we arrived in New York. On August 12, 13 and 14 we participated in the S.O.S. event held at the Penn Plaza Pavillion on 7th Avenue in NYC. This was the Show Of Sustainable Sourcing for apparel, home & more. We had a small booth on the ground floor below the 'DIRECTIONS' international textile and surface design show. It was a great networking opportunity and all involved got to learn more about the specific talents of the eco designers, manufacturers and marketing experts who shared our intimate space. (not to mention how much I enjoyed reconnecting with so many dear industry friends and colleagues who were shopping the Directions show and also serrendipitously stopped by our table/exhibit at SOS) Thanks to the SOS team who made the days
fun and fruitful. Hope to see you all again at other events.
We are now completing our new collection of prints and hope to have them ready by late fall. We will be sending a web blast to all of our designer contacts as soon as it arrives.

Last month Deb had the chance to view a workshop/webcast from Washington-The Federal Trade Commission's session on "Green Washing"/Labeling--Here are some of her points of interest:
* The Organic industry has grown 35% between 2001-2007 driven by consumers making a lifestyle choice as well as those with allergy sensitivites.
* There are misleading claims in the industry -- It is the responsibility of the business to know their sourcing chain and to label accurately.
* Bamboo put through the viscose process or regenerated loses the properties of natural bamboo and is commonly referred to as rayon from bamboo and should be labeled as such. Pat Slater from Consumer Reports sited an article "Bamboozel by Rayon". She also states that although an inferior textile is not a hazard to life and limb, higher pricing on these specialty products DOES affect a consumers pocketbook.
*Katheleen Huddy from the GoodHousekeeping Institute says consumers are receptive to green products as long as they perform and don't cost much more
*The footprint of your product must be considered--Lifecycle Assessment. Patagonia leads the way in their "Footpath Chronicles" which currently measures the impact of 10 of their products. These are tracked on their website.
* An organic treatment for flame retardants is not yet available but GOTS permits where required by law.
*If you are using recycled materials--know what you are getting. Is it post industrial or post consumer?
Organic methods of production ARE beneficial and well documented in spite of what some may claim.
*Consumers are starting to recognize some third party certifications on labels. Oeko-Tex, Blue Sign and several others.
*Keep product label simple but clear and refer to your website for additinal information on the product.
*Are soy and milk fibers really green--jury still out?

Ballard Park Benefit and 'Green Drinks'

So, just to update;

We were asked by our friend and colleague, Meaghan O'Neill (author of Ready, Set, Green and one of the founders of Treehugger)if we would consider donating some OT fabrics to a very worthy cause; the preservation of Newport RI's only nature preserve-Ballard Park, so we did in fact, enthusiastically, offer 3 of our pillows made from completely sustainable/organic materials, right down to the recycled, nickle free zippers...and they were very well received. Newport is just gorgeous in the summer--really the quintessential seaside New England town. We also had the chance last week to visit the beautiful Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown, RI for a Green Drinks event where Meaghan gave a passionate speech about the benefits of living green; making even small adjustments in our lives to help move the planet toward a more sustainable future. Check out her book--It's incredibly informative.

As well, we have been busy making pillows and other accessories for The newportmanisons.org cafe and gift shop. If you've never had the opportunity to visit Newport, especially the exquistite homes along Bellview Avenue and Ocean Drive, take a tour..it's well worth it...a bygone era of outrageously gorgeous architecture.

TradeShows and EcoShops

So our Ocean Collection has been navigating it's way up and down the east coast and across the pond as well. Thanks to the wonderful folks at TODL ,our collection was displayed at the IWCE show in Atlanta last month...see our Wavelength /redtide mounted on the TODL Green Display.

Thanks to Nancy Reynolds from The Green Room in Middletown RI, our collection was displayed at the NESEA (Northeast Sustainable Energy Association) show in Boston's World Trade Center last month. And finally, thanks to Lisa Harland our London rep at Harland Organic Furnishings, the collection will now be part of the offerings from a new Design Shop in Chiswick called ECO AGE, founded by Nicola Giuggioli.

Resourceful Reclaiming

Ok I just have to mention that my incredibly resourceful partner has convinced a local shipyard to give us all of the plastic used to wrap the pleasure boats so common to this area in the summer.

When these boats are out of the water through the cold weather months, they're 'shrink wrapped' in shipyards all over New England.

She hauled this stuff over to her yard, cleaned it up and we have now reclaimed it as our packaging material of choice....waste not, want not as ye olde pilgrims would say.

Springtime in Chicago

So, it's been two weeks since my last post. I don't know how time passes so quickly; but we've been busy and it has. Our Chicago reps at Urban Source sent these photos recently of their display windows. Note OT fabrics in "green". We, here in New England are also thrilled that the weather has finally warmed up. 3 Cheers for Spring!!! And thank you Rose.

On another note, my partner and I just recently took a 2 1/2 hour tour through a local New England Mill just to chat with the Mill Stylist about dyes and machinery, and finshing...and all those exciting, relevant textile issues that we are so consumed by these days. As our colleagues, Harmony, and Michelle know, we are on a quest to find a US mill willing to go 100% GOTS. This was not that mill unfortunately, but with a bit more perseverance we will find one . There are an increasing number of designers just like us looking for a certified mill so if these factories will just be a little more open minded, they would see the potential for business and seriously consider working with us to implement the necessary changes. Stay tuned.

So here we are at the end of what has been a very productive year. In fact one year ago today, we were just beginning the whole nitty gritty manufacturing process for our debut line-"Ocean Collection". It's been both fullfilling and frustrating...but mostly fun! What an education! Even with all of the ups and downs, Deb and I are sure that this road less traveled is the right one for us as a company and we eagerly await the new year with all of the new possibilities. We've been privileged to have met some wonderful people from magazine editors (look for us in upcoming issues of Domino, Design New England, Coastal Living and Taditional Home) to designers and fellow entrepreneurs. We are thankful for every word of encouragement, praise, or gasp of excitement. And we are also thankful for the miracle of continued health for a sister in full recovery from a Leukemia diagnosis one year ago. Life throws ya some crazy curves sometimes so as we round the bend to this new year we do so with gratitude and wishes to one and all for health and prosperity.

Update:

On Saturday, 11/10 we were invited by Verdant Magazine to display our new collection in their showroom at the New York Design Center. (200 Lexington Avenue) It's called The Green Room and acts as a showcase for sustainable product design. Our fabrics will be on view there until early January. We are very happy to have a New York venue for our collection and are working towards creating more of a presence in NYC. It was thrilling to set up the show and we want to thank Victoria Foraker at Verdant www.verdantmag.com for being so encouraging.

(and a wonderful seamstress, Jean Quigley for sewing up our pillows so quickly )

Good to go.......

Ok. it's been a few weeks since my NY trip and we've spent most of our time tieing up all the loose ends to complete production, send swatches and market the collection; happily, as of 10/18 all of our production yardage is in stock.

I drove down to our mill myself to pick up this last run of "Shellgame". Personally, I really enjoy meeting face to face with my printer to iron out details. It makes a marked difference in building a relationship with a supplier when you can speak in person. One day we will be printing overseas, but right now I am relishing the ease of travel and communication.

I can't stress enough how glad I am to have all 3 of our patterns in all 9 colorways here with me and ready to ship. I can now of course re-focus my energies on new designs/colors already in development!

On another important note: I know that the Organic Exchange is having their 5th annual conference on October 29th in Monterey County, CA. Material Girls

So, what do I take away from my visit to the "Material World" show in NY this week? Well, after walking the floor, visiting booths, exploring pantone's 'Trend Pavillion' and attending the

seminars, the most memorable 90 minutes was David Shah's presentation - From the Austere to the Absurd.

Mr. Shah, as the moderator chose to introduce him, is the futurist and publisher of Textile View Magazine.He is a brilliant thinker and extremely entertaining speaker. From his opening description of "Generation Jones, those born right after the baby boomers, "(picture the character Carrie Bradshaw from "Sex and theCity") as the first generation to fully embrace lifestyle culture, and a market segment not to be ignored; to his closing remarks - "The only way to survive in business today, is to create, to think outside the box". I was wrapt. He stressed the new approach to global commerce as "right brain thinking", and how this will leave us free to really create; to understand that Design is not the privelege of the rich, but rather, what we all need. He went on to say that people are no longer afraid of technology and emphasized the importance of transparency in manufacturing, quite literally getting around the table with your suppliers and being honest with your customers. After all, is anything secret anymore? Can't everything be found on the web? And to that point, did you know that there are some 60,000 fashion associated websites..that means a lot of people / consumers talking and listening to each other. It means much more consumer independence. It also means the old 'bricks and mortar' style of retailing will be partnered with digital retailing in a huge way. It already is in Europe.

Some of this information is not new, but it was thrilling for me as the owner of a young company, to hear such a passionate, exciting, and encouraging speaker. My late partner of 19 years, Sam Apple - a gifted designer himself, would have given Mr. Shah a well deserved round of applause....so did I.

A Lot Like Giving Birth....

Strike-off Success

Well, we received our new strikeoffs last Friday and we are happy to annouce that they look very very good! We are extremely pleased with the colors and 'hand' of these new samples....with a couple of color adjustments, we will be ready for production this month. Finally. It's been a long process, but a great education....we will continue to research and develop our eco-friendly fabrics....stay tuned for new experiments. ....will inform you of upcoming venues for Oliveira Textiles.

You Go Girls....

Hello everyone.
Just to update--we are expecting our new strikeoffs this week and of course are anxiously waiting. It's just thrilling to see our designs finally printed. As soon as we approve them we will add the photos of our fabrics to the site and begin sending samples to our prospective agents. It has been challenging to say the least to meet all the requirements of the organic guidelines but I can say with confidence that we have done our level best to manufacture a safe and healthy product; one our customers will love. We really aim to create a unique, 'designer' level textile, while staying true to our mission: ...."producing environmentally-friendly fabrics that combine fine design with sustainable material". As well, we are constantly researching new technologies that will help us achieve these goals.
The Digital Printing Process in textiles is what I consider to be one of the most exciting new avenues in the industry and one in which we plan to educate our customers . There have been impressive strides made in the wearability of these kinds of fabrics with regards to lightfastness, washabilty, and overall durability. We have every intention of moving in this direction with future collections while maintaining our traditional screen printed collections.
Look for new prints and colorways over the coming months.
We're standing at the edge, waiting to leap.....and FLY!

The Waiting Game

Well, it's been a couple of weeks of impatient waiting while our mill has been on vacation...
but we are back in touch and looking forward to our second set of strikeoffs. As soon as we have them and approve of them, we will add them to our website for all of you to see.
And, as always we continue our research for new sources of organic fibers and dyes.
In the mean time..check out my comment in Eco-Textile News...our publication of choice for incredibly relevant information on environmentally friendly fabrics.

In The Beginning....

Hello, It's Thursday June 28th and we are very excited to see our first strikeoffs--fabric samples--tomorrow....These are our very first prints, 'Wavelength' and 'Anemone' and we can't wait to see our art printed...after 23 years designing textiles in New York for many other manufacturers, it is thrilling to finally be producing a product of our own...we've had some minor challenges printing on our hemp because of the natural 'lignens' in the fiber. The fabric is resisiting the dyes slightly so we will have to iron out this detail..my printer says it will be fine and we believe him. (Of course we are reading everything there is to know about printing on hemp anyway)
And by the way...if there is a textile printer in the Northeastern US who is using fiber-reactive dyes certified by "The Global Organic Textile Standards" body...or is at least aming their company in that direction ....please call us...currently the only printers we know of are overseas.
and since our goal is to 'decrease' our environmental footprint...we would much prefer to print here in the US...
And for those of you interested in samples...we hope to have our yardage by early August.
